Pre-Act
Amber Pinkerton’s “I Pledge” creates a compelling collage of her birth country, Jamaica. By overlaying images of the island's landscape with oversaturated TV show scenes, timeworn classroom pictures and words from cultural icons such as Jamaican poet Miss Lou, Pinkerton crafts the archival material garnered from the internet into an artwork that feels deeply personal. The artist states: “Especially during George Floyd, I wanted to create something that felt patriotic and empowering to my cultural identity - triggering childhood memories of iconography, sounds and visuals.” It’s a pool of references, like being granted a look into Pinkerton's private workstation — or onto Jamaica's complex cultural heritage, as seen by the artist.
